A conversation between myself and my physiotherapist that does one on Pilates with me.
“I’m broken.“
“No, you are not.”
“I feel as if I am an old jalopy with bits falling off or apart, and being held together by duck tape.”
“You are injured and healing. Words matter. Changing thought patterns is important. You have the right mindset for rehabilitation, you do the work, you show up. But you need to change the perspective of yourself. Yes, you have an underlining connective tissue disorder. People’s bodies age. I am of the firm belief that people can heal. You need to be positive. We can all be depreciating.”
I have food for thought. I can work on changing my outset.
But
I think I am developing arthritis in my knuckles . . .
Depreciating or deprecating? Either! I like how you use dialogue to tell your story here. And I appreciate the humor in the end… typing, much?!

Ack – thanks for spotting the word conundrum! My typing has been AWFUL since my concussion. I’ve been misspelling things left, right, and center. Thanks for noticing the humor in the end. If we can laugh at ourselves, rather than cry, things are not as weighty.

Oh, I can identify with this. I think I need to make this a new mantra: “You are injured and healing.” Be sure to thank you physiotherapist for me.

I empathize with the feeling that it’s a downhill roll when some challenge seems too much to take.
I love the pragmatic words…aging is a process and attitude is everything. I balk and resist but find myself kinder than I ever used to be…to myself. Hang in there. Healing happens from the inside out too. Arthritis benefits from motion. Keep writing!

Thanks for your encouragement, Trish. Writing can help heal from the inside, so I should ensure I keep writing : )

Mindset and attitude play a huge part in the healing process. Usually when things seem at their worst that is when they start turning around.

Listen to the wise words of your therapist. From the moment we are born, we are racing to the ultimate finish line. You’ve simply changed your pace in this marathon we call life. The narrative you construct and embrace matters. It’s key to your recovery.

“The narrative you construct and embrace matters.” This statement is powerful. You have given me a gem, Glenda. Thank you.

Wise words, indeed. Even for me, an unknown aging reader.
